Ostomy Underwear and Ostomy Clothing
|return to ostomy care page|
Ostomy underwear is designed to conceal and support the ostomy pouch. Several types of ostomy underwear and clothing are available to accommodate men and women with stomas on the right or left side of the abdomen. Ostomates with stomas on the upper part of the abdomen can use an ostomy belt to secure the pouching system.
Types of Ostomy Underwear and Ostomy Clothing
Ostomy patients can wear several different types of garments to assist in managing the stoma after the procedure. Ostomy underwear is designed to support the abdomen and usually contains a pouch to secure the ostomy bag. Colostomy clothing designed for post-op recovery assists patients with the transition and adjustment. Ostomy belts and trouser adjusters are also available for patients that want to wear clothes already in their wardrobe.
Suitable Ostomy Clothing for Men
Ostomy pouches are designed to conform to the body and discreetly contain output, giving many colostomy patients the ability to wear their own clothing with the pouching system in place. Ostomy clothing, e.g., ostomy underwear, pants, shirts, and swimwear, have been designed for men and women and are often comfortable, stylish, and long lasting. Trouser adjusters are also available to wear with pants that sit at the level of the stoma or above.
Suitable Ostomy Clothing for Women
Women with stomas can often continue to wear their favorite outfits after an ostomy procedure, but some items may need to be tailored or discarded if they fit too tightly around the stoma. In addition to ostomy underwear, women can purchase specialty swimwear, lingerie, and ostomy covers. Women can also find an assortment of outfits and other ileostomy clothing designed to accommodate the stoma.
What to Look for When Buying Ostomy Clothing
With ostomy underwear and clothing, it is important to make sure that the garment fits loosely enough to allow for breathable room around the stoma and for output to collect in the ostomy bag. When wearing an ostomy belt or ostomy underwear, you may find that loosely fitting clothing feels the best on your body. Many people are able to wear the same clothes that they wore before the surgery, perhaps with a few minor alterations by a local seamstress.
